Courses: English II, English III
Sophomore English is designed for students to learn, develop and effectively apply a variety of writing and reading skills aligned with the Arizona State and national Common Core Standards. As 10th graders they will be spending a large portion of class time practicing the writing process, and developing their 6 Traits of writing skills. Over the entire school year students will be reading and analyzing a wide variety of fiction, nonfiction, classic and contemporary works with the goal to identify and understand each author’s use of literary elements and figurative language.
Junior English is essential in providing the foundation for advanced English studies. This comprehensive course examines the writing process for narrative, argument, synthesis, and analysis writing. Students will read a variety of non-fiction and fiction texts focusing on the development and progression of the American Dream. Additionally, students will acquire a repertoire of new vocabulary and grammar skills in preparation for standardized college admissions tests and academic writing. The ultimate goal of this course is to help student’s develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in order to achieve college and career readiness.
I studied English Literature during my bachelor's program at Arizona State University and returned to Arizona State to obtain my master's degree in Education. This is my second year teaching at Highland and I also help coach track and field in the spring (as the jumps coach).
